In nearly every school around the country there is English Language Learners (ELL) present. An ELL student is someone who has a different language other than English as their home language. A lot of these students move here from different countries. However, some of them are born here and just grew up in a community where English wasn’t required to communicate. Some students come into the school system with no English at all and are put into classrooms where they can’t communicate. It is then up to the teacher and other professionals around the school to not only helping the student to learn English but also making them feel comfortable as well. There are many different strategies that can be used to help ELL students including the use of visuals, explicit instruction, and clear directions, to name a few.
While in my final internship at Edison State College in the Elementary Education program I was instructed to do an ESOL capstone project. In this project I will be working with one student from my mentor’s classroom who is an ELL student. I will observe her and record my observations on a SOLOM (student oral language observation matrix). Once the matrix is complete I will create five different lessons in which I will teach to the student. Each lesson will go along with the five different areas of oral language (comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar). ELL students need a lot of one on one time and that's what I plan on doing with this student.
